The Oversized Visor Family Photo That Almost Didn’t Happen 👒😂

This private family haunted pub crawl ended the same way a lot of the best tours do:
With absolutely zero dignity left.
Not because of the ghosts.
Not because of the drinks.
Because of the hats.
The funniest part?
The hats didn’t even come out until the last bar.
For most of the evening, everybody was perfectly normal. We were wandering Charleston discussing hauntings, folklore, strange experiences, local history, family stories, and all the wonderfully weird rabbit holes that tend to happen on private tours through Charleston.
And then somebody discovered the oversized visor hats.
That was it.
The entire energy of the night shifted instantly. 😭
Suddenly there were dramatic poses, fake glamour shots, hidden faces, chaotic selfies, and fully grown adults dissolving into laughter while looking like a paranormal safari team that got lost on the way to Margaritaville.
And somehow…
Even after all of that…
I was still too nervous to ask for a group photo.
By the end of the night, I finally worked up the courage to say:
“Okay but… would y’all maybe be willing to do one group picture in the hats?”
Immediate chaos.
Immediate commitment.
No hesitation whatsoever.
Everybody leaned ALL the way in.
And honestly?
It became one of my favorite tour photo sets ever.
Especially because these hats were never even supposed to become “a thing.”
I originally brought them thinking maybe one or two guests might find them amusing.
Instead, they have somehow evolved into recurring haunted pub crawl artifacts capable of instantly destroying everybody’s composure by the final bar. 👒💀
These things have now:
survived haunted pub crawls,
witnessed dramatic group selfies,
hidden entire human faces,
participated in fake fashion shoots,
and become emotionally significant oversized visor hats.
And honestly?
I kind of love that.
Because this is exactly the kind of thing I love most about running private tours through History, Haunts, & Hahas!
Yes, the tours are built around Charleston history, hauntings, folklore, and research-driven ethical storytelling.
But the thing people remember most is usually the feeling.
The laughter.
The connection.
The inside jokes that accidentally form over the course of the night.
You can literally watch it happen in real time:
the polite beginning,
the comfort level building,
the inside jokes forming,
the collective loss of composure,
and finally…
everybody agreeing to wear giant ridiculous visors in public without shame. 👒😂
That’s the magic people remember years later.
Not just the ghost stories.
The feeling of genuinely having fun together.
So if you ever book a tour and notice the visor hats appear near the end of the night…
Just know there is an extremely high probability your dignity is about to leave your body.
And honestly?
That usually means it was a great tour.
